Ok, so Hallowe’een is actually today, and technically tonight should be the night for ghosties and ghouls, but as I have work tomorrow (pfffft!) I needed to go out to play last night to make the most of the thirteenth hour!
All started well; Medusa managed to just about totter over the Air in Worcester (Broad Street), purchase a lovely shot or two from the fabulous t*girl barmaid Luci and settle down for a night of Thriller, Ghostbusters and dancing.
Good times!
Now there are a couple of things that you should know about Air. Air is a great little bar in Worcester which is run by a gay couple; M and D, and is for everyone. They want to promote a uniting of elements to make a bar in Worcester that is truly open to everyone and an angels and demons Hallowe’en Hoe’down should have been a perfect place to start.
Shame really that Worcester rather let itself down.
As a group of guys and one girl staggered in it was evident that they had had rather a lot to drink; they were drinking shots, babbling excitedly and had eyes on stalks as they surveyed the other party-goers in Air. Two of our hosts for the evening were t*girl Diva’s Ms Luci and Ms Janice, both are fabulous, and very feisty, so when the boys at the table realised that they were ‘just jocks in frocks’ and ‘obviously a bunch of f*&%$ing poofs’ words swiftly ensued. Things were escalated, and the bouncer immediately gave a warning which was broken.
Now I cannot profess to have heard it all, but as I stood outside taking a drag on my cigarette, I did over hear a few of the comments as they were unceremoniously removed from the bar; ‘I’m more of a woman than she’ll ever be’ was professed by the girl of the group who seemed to have taken most personally that there was a ‘jock in a frock’ was in there looking rather stunning, along with ‘this is a gay bar for gay people, there’s nothing for us here’ yelled over and over until the guy in question turned round and started ogling one of the other girls in a corset and shouting ‘ nice knockers you gothy s**g’.
Lovely, and who said that charm and charisma were dead?!
It was all over within about 10 minutes (the police were called and the group were quickly dispersed to another bar in town) and was handled expertly by the bouncer & the staff, and supported by the majority of the people in the bar and outside on the street. We turned back to our drinks, rolled our eyes and continued our night to its happy conclusion.
But as I sit here in bed with my coffee, croissants and laptop I am left with an uncomfortable feeling which is more than just sore feet…
Is Worcester really ready for a bar for ‘everyone’ where drinkers of all shapes, sizes and sexuality blend together like a good old-fashioned roasted coffee?
Do people who emphatically do NOT want to open their minds and see that there are people different from them have a right to know about the bar that they are entering?
Its it naive to think that really people should be ready and open to everything? And how can these sections of society be better supported in opening their eyes?
At worst, how to best inform them that this is probably not the place for them and ensure that visitors to such places (including my little home for coffee and kink lovers) are not there for just the freak factor…
Questions, questions, questions…
